The Dive Animals originally started out in 1984 as the Convair Scuba Club and was setup for General Dynamics employees. It was subsidized by the company and over the next 6 years two inflatable Zodiac style boats were purchased. In 1990 General Dynamics was shrinking fast, and by 1993 it had sold off its divisions that were located in San Diego.
With no longer any corporate sponsorship, John Ellerbrock decided to
run the club as a standalone non-profit and after incorporating with
the state and securing insurance the Convair Scuba Club was reformed
as the Dive Animals Scuba Club. Since 1993 the DASC has been one of the
cornerstones of the San Diego diving scene. Club membership has
remained strong at one hundred plus members. Every year club
members organize trips to destinations such as Bonaire, Roatan and
Cozumel, as well as closer to home adventures in La Bufadora Mexico,
Catalina and our own Channel Islands. The club always maintains at least one dive boat and this makes it unique compared to other local clubs." |
