First Diver Experiences!

By Gloria Henderson
(Huge Kudos to Gloria for even remembering a comment that I made during one of the socials.  I didn't think anyone listens when I start off with "How would you like to write an article for the Brief?"
We all felt this way when we first started diving, and it's nice to be reminded that new divers still see a fresh and unusual world in what we so often take for granted. - Scott)
Scott Bell asked me to jot down some of my observations from the perspective of a "newbie" diver. He had to wait a bit because my first real dive came, due to scheduling and lousy conditions, a full six months after my certification last November.
My dive instructor-dive buddy took me to the canyon off La Jolla Shores.  One of the first spectacles was a four-inch sheep crab.  At our approach, it pulled itself up to its full height, claws waving overhead in a fierce defensive display.  How ferocious! How adorable!  Leaving him unmo

lested, I could just imagine him thinking, "Ha! I showed them!

After a couple more minutes of crawling along the ocean floor, it occurred to me that I should probably be swimming, like the pictures in my dive magazines, and like my buddy, who was effortlessly neutrally buoyant.  A quick shot of air into my BC and nothing.  Another little shot.  The same.  A third send me floating surfaceward.  I got vertical, fully vented, and resumed crawling on the bottom.  I repeated this procedure religiously throughout the dive.

We came upon a starfish almost one foot wide.  My buddy touched it gently.  Emboldened, I did too and was surprised at how soft it was, how like a human.  Maybe I was surprised because the only starfish I ever handled was the dried, petrified variety in souvenir stores.  An alien type of locomotion caught the corner of my eye, and to my amazement, there was a little octopus.  I couldn't believe my good luck to see one on my first dive.
