Message From The Prez - Mike Stiles

I see on the news that the water temp is right around 59 degrees and getting warmer every day, OK, maybe every few days.   What that means for most of us, is that it's time to dust off the equipment (make sure it's working OK), find that wetsuit you stuffed in a corner of the garage last fall and get ready for several months of great local diving.  The Club had its first general meeting of the year on April 1st at Angelo's on Clairemont Mesa. The weather was cold and rainy, but we still had 26 members in attendance.  The new board members introduced themselves and talked a little bit about what their area of club responsibility is.  Three members in attendance won $20.00 gift certificates from Divers Discount Supply in a club sponsored raffle.  Mary Jonilonis presented a great slide show of her recent trip to the Solomon Islands and talked about the Underwater Photography Society. Mary is a member of this group as well as the Dive Animals. If you are interested in taking pictures in the briny deep , the Underwater Photography Society can help you get started or sharpen your existing skills.  Contact Mary at: mary.l.jonilonis@cpmx.saic.com for more info.

I know everyone is anxious to know about the club boats. I'll let Jim Hudson fill you in on that, but suffice it to say they are ready to go.  Jim has been

working furiously to make sure of this and except for yours truly cutting a replacement floorboard for the Avon wrong (OOPS), they are in good shape. Many thanks to John Leek, Lee Olsen and Drew Verkade for helping out with the boats a few weeks back.  I know Jim is always looking for new boat operators and for volunteers to help with the boats, so if you're interested, give him a call or send him an e-mail.  Speaking of Volunteers, Pam Speidel has agreed to head up the position of Fund Raising for the club.  Thank you Pam for stepping forward and taking on this task.  I know one of our fund raising goals is to raise enough funds to buy a new (newer) boat later this year.  If you have some ideas, or want to help Pam, please let her know.  A round of applause for retiring fund raising chair person Ed Lavin. I know his Beer Brewing party last year was lots of fun and very successful also.

I know Frances has lots of club events to talk about, like the club picnic, so I will leave that to her. She does a fantastic job of organizing club trips and events and I know I speak for everyone when I say, Thank you Frances for all of your efforts. If anyone wants to put together a trip, please contact Frances. Also if you would like to help with the picnic, give Frances a call.  We will see a new column in the Pelican Brief start

ing with this issue.  John Ellerbrock, founder of the club, Master Instructor and general diving guru will keep us all informed with his words of wisdom each issue.  With John's experience, I know his articles will be educational as well as entertaining.

And lest we all forget, it's renewal time again. Dave Copenhaver and Donna Kruse, our Membership Chairpersons will be contacting all of you in the near future about renewing and soliciting ideas that will enable us to continue to be the premier Dive Club in San Diego.  As always, if anyone would like to get involved in any aspect of the club or has suggestions please contact one of the officers or myself. After all this is
YOUR Club.

See ya on the bottom,

Mike

Ed Note:  Congratulations to Mike and his Fiancé!  And I wish (as I am sure we all do) all the best in their recent
marriage!

Notes from the Treasurer - Stacey Nelson

Hello,

I'm Treasurer Stacey Nelson and I am kicking off my second year as your trusty treasurer and I am proud to say we have not yet filed for bankruptcy! Actually, we've done a better job of managing our spending and increasing revenue. This was a

ing against previous years reports to ensure that in the big picture, more money is coming in than going out.  Negotiating and monitoring the insurance policies.  Constantly reviewing options to improve our financial status (i.e, fundraisers, cutting spending etc).  Investigating opportunities
