Aug 2009 Bonaire by Bill Walkup

I will be setting up to dive at La Jolla Shores on Saturday, July 18, 2009, for the first monthly DASC shore dive.  I plan on bringing an ice chest with some drinks and snacks along with my pop up canopy and a couple of chairs.  Oh, and not to forget, I will also be bringing along a couple of tanks to do two dives.  I plan on setting up around 7am and will be there until about noon or so.   I will be setting up in the area where we hold our annual picnic.

Come on out and let's get a couple of additional dives under our belts.  Summertime is wasting away and conditions have been fantastic! Contact Bill.

HORIZON CHARTERS – BEST OF SOUTHERN

CHANNEL ISLANDS / OIL RIGS

NOVEMBER 12 – 15, 2009

CABINS $540 / BUNKS $500

Climb aboard the live aboard dive boat with Frances SanClemente for an unforgettable adventure through the best dive spots in Southern California. Often referred to as "The Galapagos of California", the Southern Channel Islands are known for clear water, lush kelp beds, diverse reefs, and tons of marine life. Most recently, we’ve come across schools of sharks, yes sharks. We’ve been diving with soupfins and leopard sharks! Weather permitting, we will dive San Clemente, Santa Barbara’s famous Brittlestar Bonanza, and Catalina’s Farnsworth Banks, possibly a day of oil rig diving! The seamounts are home to large pelagics like white sea bass, yellowtail, Bonita, and even giant black sea bass. The reefs brag fields of colorful purple and orange hydrocoral and swaying amber kelp stalks. Diverse kelp forests span much of the reefs, with typical visibility between 50 and 100 feet!  On the way home, we’ll watch out for blue whales, dolphins and mola mola. Plenty of photo ops here!

Fall is the best time to dive the islands, with Santa Ana conditions bringing normally higher water temperature, calm seas and great visibility. With up to five different dive sites to explore each day, we will experience a good sampling of the character the Southern islands have to offer. With a recently-expanded spacious deck and restaurant style galley, roomy sun deck, comfortable bunks and great food, the Horizon is the choice boat for island hopping. Docked only five minutes from San Diego airport, it’s a quick taxi ride to the harbor if you fly, or you can drive down.

We will board the boat in San Diego between 7 and 8 PM on Thursday November 12th, heading to San Clemente or Santa Barbara overnight, weather permitting. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday will be spent diving the best spots in the Southern Channel Islands. The boat will arrive back at port around 8:00 PM Sunday, November 15th. If you’re coming from out of town, The Vagabond Inn hotel is right at the harbor so you can book a night there before flying back or driving back on Monday Morning, November 16th.
